Member ActivitiesThroughout the year, QICA presents monthly programs on a variety of topics and issues of concern to seniors. These activities are designed to facilitate networking, education and advocacy among seniors, service professionals and policy makers. Programs are free for members with a nominal registration fee for major conferences. Some events provide a specific “call to action” on key issues. There are at least six general membership meetings each year and a number of special events, including: Annual Legislative ForumHeld every fall so that members can present important legislative priorities to Federal, State and City elected representatives and discuss solutions. Annual Senior Advocacy Day at City HallIn April, groups of senior citizens accompanied by senior center staff from each City Council District meet with their Council Member to discuss needs and issues of concern. Co-sponsored with Council of Seniors Centers and Services of NYC (CSCS). Annual ConferenceA co-sponsored event with the Geriatrics Committee of the Queens Mental Health Council and the Queensboro Council for Social Welfare. Each year a different theme of interest to the senior community is presented. Monthly Programs & ConferencesPrevious program topics have included Medicare Part D and EPIC, Emergency Preparedness, EISEP (Expanded In-home Services for the Elderly), Paying for Prescription Drugs, Senior Housing Needs & Visions - Defining Problems and Developing Solutions, 4th Queens Caregiver Conference, “Caregiving: Culture,Values and Stigma." Ongoing Initiatives:Monthly Programs & ConferencesIn collaboration with Queens Borough President Helen M. Marshall, QICA continues its successful free film series for older adults. Screenings take place in the fall and spring for senior groups and individuals who also received free admission to museum exhibitions. On average, more than 150 seniors attended each screening representing ten or more senior centers. Chief Museum Curator, David Schwartz introduces each screening with a discussion on film history and content. QICA’s role as catalyst and organizer includes arranging transpiration, registration and marketing. The purpose of the series is to provide arts enrichment and learning opportunities to seniors in a museum setting. Program is ongoing. See upcoming events |
